Quick answer
Airport ground staff salary in India for freshers has typically been around ₹18,000 to ₹25,000 a month in public job notices. For example, an April 2024 AI Airport Services advertisement for Jaipur airport listed ₹21,270 for junior customer service executives (Plus Two) and ₹24,960 for customer service executives (degree). Pay rises with experience, overtime, shift allowances and promotion to supervisory roles.
Key takeaways
- Real notices are the most reliable salary guide: AIASL's April 2024 Jaipur advertisement listed ₹18,840 to ₹29,760 a month across entry roles.
- Newest notice (2026): AIASL's Passenger Service Agent (Trainee) intake pays a ₹10,000 monthly stipend for an 11-month training period, open to graduates nominated by aviation institutes; regular pay applies only after absorption.
- In Kerala, a December 2023 AIASL walk-in listed ₹20,130 (Plus Two) and ₹23,640 (degree) for customer service roles.
- Overtime and shift work can add to take-home pay; Outlook reported loaders earning around ₹30,000 with overtime in 2024.
- Know the difference between gross pay, CTC and take-home before you compare offers.
- Growth comes from experience, supervisor and duty officer roles, airline jobs and opportunities abroad.
Ask ten people about airport ground staff salary in India and you will get ten different numbers. Many websites quote figures without saying where they came from. In this guide, I have used published job advertisements and reputable news reports wherever possible, so you can see what employers have actually offered and decide for yourself.
All figures below are monthly unless stated, and they are examples from specific notices on specific dates. Pay changes over time and differs between employers, airports and cities.
Who are airport ground staff?
"Ground staff" is a broad term for everyone who works for an airline or airport service company on the ground rather than on board. It includes:
- Passenger services: check-in, boarding gates, transfer desks, lounges and special assistance.
- Ramp services: loading and unloading baggage and cargo, operating ground equipment and guiding aircraft.
- Baggage services: tracing lost or delayed bags.
- Cargo: acceptance, documentation and warehouse handling.
- Technical and support roles: maintaining ground equipment and vehicles.
Most of these people work for ground handling companies, which serve many airlines at one airport, or directly for an airline at its stations.
What is the airport ground staff salary in India for freshers?
Update, 2026: AIASL's 2026 recruitment for Passenger Service Agents (Trainee) is a training scheme, not a salaried walk-in. Trainees receive a ₹10,000 monthly stipend for 11 months, applications go through recognised aviation training institutes, and the intake that closed on 17 April 2026 was for graduates. Treat the salaried figures below (2023–24 notices) as the benchmark for regular entry roles, and the stipend as what a trainee route pays first.
One of the clearest public examples comes from AI Airport Services Limited (AIASL), which publishes its pay in recruitment advertisements. Its April 2024 walk-in advertisement for Jaipur airport, as summarised by Physics Wallah (we could not open the original PDF), listed these monthly salaries, with an age limit of 28 for all posts:
| Role | Minimum qualification | Monthly salary listed (Jaipur, April 2024) |
|---|---|---|
| Handyman | 10th pass | ₹18,840 |
| Utility agent cum ramp driver | 10th pass with valid heavy vehicle licence | ₹21,270 |
| Junior customer service executive | Plus Two | ₹21,270 |
| Customer service executive | Bachelor's degree, any discipline | ₹24,960 |
| Ramp service executive | 3-year engineering diploma or ITI | ₹24,960 |
| Junior officer, technical | B.E./B.Tech in specified branches, plus driving licence | ₹29,760 |
So, for a fresher in passenger services, a realistic starting point from this example is about ₹21,000 with Plus Two and about ₹25,000 with a degree. These are listed salaries; take-home pay after statutory deductions will be somewhat lower.
Can freshers negotiate? In large recruitment drives with fixed posts and published pay, there is usually little room. Your real bargaining power comes later, when you have two or three years of experience, a clean record and skills such as departure control systems, load control or cargo documentation that an employer needs.
What is the ground staff salary in Kochi and Kerala?
For ground staff salary in Kochi, the closest public example is a December 2023 AIASL walk-in for Kochi, Kannur and Kozhikode. Onmanorama reported 128 vacancies across the three airports, with:
- Customer service executive (graduate): ₹23,640 a month
- Junior customer service executive (Plus Two): ₹20,130 a month
The posts were on a three-year contract, renewable based on performance and need.
It is also useful to look back. An AIASL advertisement for Cochin in January 2019 listed gross pay of ₹17,790 for customer agents and ₹25,300 for junior executives (technical). Comparing 2019, 2023 and 2024 notices shows that entry pay for passenger service roles at this employer has moved up gradually, not dramatically.
What is the customer service agent salary at an airport compared with other roles?
The customer service agent salary at an airport is usually in the same band as ramp roles at entry level, as the AIASL table shows. The difference comes later, through overtime and allowances.
Ramp and loading roles often involve more overtime. In July 2024, Outlook India reported that airport loaders earn between ₹20,000 and ₹25,000, and that most earn around ₹30,000 with overtime. The same report described about 25,000 applicants turning up for 600 vacancies at Mumbai airport, which shows how competitive these jobs are.
You will also find salary aggregator websites quoting ground staff pay. Their figures are self-reported, mix different roles and cities, and are not always clearly labelled as monthly or yearly, so treat published job notices like the ones above as the better guide.
What adds to the basic salary?
Your monthly pay can differ from the advertised figure because of:
- Overtime: paid when flights are delayed or the schedule is heavy.
- Shift and night allowances: some employers pay extra for night or early-morning shifts.
- Transport or meals: some companies provide pick-up and drop or subsidised meals.
- Statutory benefits: provident fund and insurance, which reduce take-home pay slightly but add long-term value.
- Staff travel: some airlines offer discounted tickets to employees, depending on company policy.
Gross pay, CTC and take-home: what is the difference?
Job notices and offer letters use different terms, and mixing them up causes a lot of disappointment in the first month.
- Gross salary is the monthly amount before deductions. AIASL's 2019 Cochin notice, for example, described its figures as "gross emoluments".
- CTC (cost to company) is everything the employer spends on you in a year, including its own PF contribution and sometimes insurance. It is always higher than what you receive.
- Take-home or net pay is what reaches your bank account after deductions such as your PF share and professional tax.
Always ask for a written offer showing gross pay, deductions and allowances before you join. If a recruiter only quotes an annual CTC, divide it by twelve and ask what the monthly net figure will be.
Does the airport or city change ground staff pay?
AIASL's December 2023 Kerala notice (₹20,130 and ₹23,640) and its April 2024 Jaipur notice (₹21,270 and ₹24,960) listed broadly similar figures for the same two customer service posts, a few months apart. Between companies, though, pay can differ. Airlines, independent ground handlers, cargo operators and airport service companies each set their own scales.
Living costs matter as much as the salary. A job at your home airport, where you can stay with family, can leave you with more savings than a slightly higher-paying job in a metro where you must pay rent and travel long distances. When you compare offers, think about rent, commuting time for early and late shifts, and food.
It can make sense to start at Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode or Kannur and move to a metro or abroad once you have experience. Over a whole career, the experience you build in your first few years can matter more than a small difference in the airport ground staff salary in India you start with.
How does ground staff career growth work?
Ground staff career growth depends on performance, extra training and patience. A common path in passenger services looks like this:
- Junior customer service executive or customer service executive: learning check-in, boarding and departure control systems.
- Senior agent or lead: handling difficult cases, training new joiners and covering special flights.
- Supervisor or duty officer: running a shift, managing staff rosters and taking decisions during disruptions.
- Duty manager or station roles: responsibility for a terminal operation or an airline's station.
Supervisor and manager pay is rarely published in fresher notices, so be wary of any website that quotes exact figures without a source. What is clear is that each step adds responsibility, and pay follows.
Other routes include moving from a ground handler to an airline, shifting into cargo, airline sales or training, or applying for airport jobs abroad after a few years of experience. My colleague Nishana Ashiba Beegam, who flew with flydubai for three years, saw that ground colleagues who knew their systems well and stayed calm during disruptions were the ones who moved up.
How can you get into a ground staff job and grow faster?
You can start preparing now, wherever you study:
- Build clear spoken English and workable Hindi; many airport notices ask for both.
- Learn airport codes, baggage rules and the basic flow of a departure.
- Practise group discussions and interview answers out loud.
- Keep grooming, punctuality and attitude professional from day one.

Frequently asked questions
What is the starting salary of airport ground staff in India?
Public notices give the clearest picture. AI Airport Services' April 2024 advertisement for Jaipur airport listed ₹21,270 a month for junior customer service executives with Plus Two and ₹24,960 for customer service executives with a degree. Handyman posts were listed at ₹18,840. Pay varies by employer, airport and year, so check each new notice.
How much do ground staff earn at Kochi airport?
In a December 2023 AI Airport Services walk-in for Kochi, Kannur and Kozhikode, customer service executives were offered ₹23,640 a month and junior customer service executives ₹20,130, on three-year renewable contracts, as reported by Onmanorama. Other employers at Kochi airport may pay differently, and figures change with each recruitment.
Do ground staff get overtime?
Many do, especially in ramp and loading roles when flights are delayed or schedules are heavy. In July 2024, Outlook India reported that airport loaders earn between ₹20,000 and ₹25,000 a month, and around ₹30,000 with overtime. Ask your employer how overtime and shift allowances are calculated before joining.
Is a degree needed to become airport ground staff?
Not always. Some roles, such as junior customer service executive, have accepted Plus Two, and some ramp and handyman roles have accepted 10th pass. Customer service executive posts usually ask for a degree. A degree can also help later when you apply for supervisory or officer-level positions.
How can ground staff increase their salary?
Pay grows mainly through experience and promotion: from agent to senior agent, then supervisor, duty officer and duty manager. Moving to an airline, specialising in cargo or training, or working abroad after a few years can also raise earnings. Strong systems knowledge, languages and a clean performance record help at each step.
