Travel Diaries #7

Chasing the Northern Lights: A Dream Journey

“Somewhere above the Arctic skies, nature paints a masterpiece that words can hardly describe.”

For years, the Northern Lights had been on my travel bucket list.

I had seen photographs of green and purple ribbons dancing across the night sky, reflected perfectly on frozen lakes and surrounded by snow-covered mountains. They looked almost unreal.

Then came the day when I finally stood beneath that sky.

As the darkness settled over the Arctic landscape, a faint green glow appeared above the mountains. Slowly, it became brighter, spreading across the sky like a curtain of light.

For a few moments, nobody spoke.

Everyone simply looked up.

That night, I understood why people travel thousands of kilometres just to witness the Aurora Borealis.

This was more than a holiday.

It was an adventure.

It was nature.

And for those carrying cameras, it was a photographer’s dream.

The Northern Lights – Nature’s Greatest Show

The Northern Lights, scientifically known as the Aurora Borealis, are a natural light display commonly visible in high-latitude regions.

The colours can range from green and yellow to pink, purple, and red, depending on atmospheric and solar conditions.

But seeing them in photographs and experiencing them in person are two completely different things.

There is something magical about standing in the silence of a frozen landscape while the sky above you seems to move.

No artificial lights.

No city noise.

Just the Arctic wilderness and a sky full of colour.

Adventure Tourism – The Journey Beyond the Lights

Chasing the Northern Lights isn’t simply about waiting for the sky to glow.

The journey itself can be an adventure.

Travellers can experience:

  • Dog sledding across snowy landscapes
  • Snowmobiling through Arctic trails
  • Winter trekking
  • Ice fishing
  • Exploring glaciers
  • Staying in remote cabins
  • Camping beneath the night sky

Every activity adds another layer to the experience.

Sometimes the Northern Lights don’t appear immediately. You may have to travel away from cities, wait in freezing temperatures, or explore remote landscapes.

And perhaps that uncertainty makes the experience even more exciting.

Nature Tourism – Entering Another World

The Arctic landscape is an attraction in itself.

Snow-covered mountains rise above frozen lakes. Vast forests stretch into the distance, while fjords and glaciers create dramatic scenery.

Away from crowded tourist destinations, the silence feels almost unreal.

This is the beauty of Nature Tourism—the opportunity to experience destinations where nature itself becomes the main attraction.

The journey also creates an appreciation for the importance of protecting these fragile environments.

Photography Tourism – Capturing the Impossible

For photographers, the Northern Lights offer an extraordinary opportunity.

A camera pointed towards the night sky can capture colours and patterns that are difficult to describe with words.

Travellers often spend hours waiting for the perfect moment.

A snow-covered cabin beneath the aurora.

A frozen lake reflecting the colours of the sky.

A mountain silhouette beneath dancing green lights.

A tent glowing warmly in the middle of a snowy landscape.

These aren’t simply photographs.

They become memories that can be carried home.

Where Can You See the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights can be experienced in several destinations located near the Arctic region.

Popular destinations include:

  • 🇳🇴 Norway
  • 🇮🇸 Iceland
  • 🇫🇮 Finland
  • 🇸🇪 Sweden
  • 🇨🇦 Canada
  • 🇺🇸 Alaska

Each destination offers a different experience, from Arctic villages and glass igloos to snow-covered forests and dramatic mountain landscapes.

The journey may be long, but for many travellers, the experience is worth every kilometre.

More Than Just a Sightseeing Trip

What makes this journey different from ordinary tourism is the combination of experiences.

You aren’t simply visiting a landmark.

You are experiencing the landscape.

You are participating in an adventure.

You are observing nature.

You are capturing memories.

This is why Northern Lights travel perfectly combines adventure tourism, nature tourism, and photography tourism.

It represents the changing expectations of modern travellers, who increasingly seek experiences rather than simply checking destinations off a list.

A Journey I Will Never Forget

As the night slowly came to an end, the Northern Lights began to fade.

The green colours disappeared into the darkness.

The mountains became silhouettes again.

The frozen landscape returned to silence.

But the memory remained.

I came looking for a spectacular photograph.

I left with something much more valuable—a feeling of connection with nature and the realization that some experiences cannot truly be captured by a camera.

You have to be there.

You have to look up.

And you have to experience them for yourself.

The Final Chapter of Travel Diaries

And with that, our Travel Diaries journey comes to an end—for now.

We explored emerging forms of tourism, walked through historic prisons, tasted food from around the world, looked towards the future of space travel, discovered extraordinary airports, followed the journey of global shipping, and finally stood beneath the Northern Lights.

Every journey taught us something different.

Travel is not just about places.

It is about people.

Culture.

Food.

Nature.

Adventure.

History.

And the experiences that stay with us long after we return home.

Perhaps the most beautiful part of travelling is knowing that there is always another destination waiting.

Another story.

Another journey.

Another diary waiting to be written.

Until the next journey… keep exploring, keep learning, and keep travelling.
